7 Ways to Make Chores More Fun

Now that we’re home most of the time, it seems like there’s a lot more chores to do. Whether it’s all the food that comes with three meals a day at home or the clutter that accumulates when your office, school and gym are at home, it feels to always do housework. And all that work can get a bit boring and repetitive. But we’ve found seven great ways to make those daily chores fun.

Pair chores with entertainment

One of the easiest ways to turn a mundane task into something you look forward to is to combine it with something you love. Folding that mountain of laundry will go through a lot faster if you put on your favorite movie while you work.

Or turn everyday chores into a dance party by putting on your favorite upbeat playlist while you dust, clean and tidy up. And to help pass the time by washing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen, turn on your favorite podcast or audiobook to distract yourself.

Upgrade your cleaning tools

If you have really great cleaning tools, you’ll be much more excited to use them. And with the right products, you can often fix what you don’t like about household chores.

Do you hate having dry hands while doing the dishes? Get yourself a good pair of rubber gloves and save your skin. But don’t stop there. Upgrade to a really good dish rack, get yourself a good scrub brush and super-soft dishcloths and suddenly a boring chore like doing the dishes will feel a little more luxurious.

Adopt technology for household chores

We already use dishwashers and washing machines to lighten some of the household chores. Why not adopt new technologies to further reduce your workload?

Reclaim your Saturday mornings by letting a self-contained lawnmower keep your lawn perfectly mowed. You can also save hours every week by investing in a robot vacuum. How are you to clean your floors so you can spend that time doing something more fun.

Change your cleaning style

Do cleaning seem less of a chore, find a style that works for you. If you’re the always-on-the-go type, a daily 10-minute burst of cleaning will keep your home always tidy. And it will pass so quickly it won’t even feel like work.

Or maybe you’d rather spend an entire morning doing a power clean so you can enjoy the rest of your week chore-free. Go for what works for you and you will find that you stress out much less about household chores.

Give yourself a reward

Sometimes you just need a little extra motivation to tackle those boring household chores. Set a cleaning goal and reward yourself when you reach it. Whether it’s your favorite snack, a little downtime, or a trip to your favorite park, the right reward will take your mind off the task at hand.

Get the whole family involved

You know the saying “many hands make light work”. And that couldn’t be truer than when it comes to housework. There are two ways to distribute household chores:

  • Divide & Conquer – make a list of all the chores that need to be done and distribute them among your family members. Give each person a task and see who can be the first to do it. The winner is assigned the following tasks.
  • Group Together – attack each task in a group to make it progress faster. If the whole family works together to to clean the kitchen, you will get the job done in record time. When the work is done, choose a fun activity that you can all do together as a prize.

To help everyone stay motivated, try making it a game or offer fun rewards.

rent it

It’s okay to get a little help when you need it. If you can afford it and it improves your stress level or mental health, consider hiring a housekeeper. The time saved is often worth it for busy families.

You can also hire someone to help you with a few specific tasks to reduce your workload and eliminate the chores you like least. Hire a neighborhood kid to mow the lawn or rake the leaves. Or try a food delivery service to help you with the burden of weekly shopping and meal planning.

Cleaning needs to be done, but it doesn’t have to be a chore! Try these seven ways to make chores more fun.
